Celebrating the Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act,
recognizing July as Disability Pride Month and the 26th of July as
Americans with Disabilities Act Day.
Resolution
(ID # 24-0978)
Councilor Clingan commented that it has taken too long to recognize those
who advocated for people with disabilities. He sponsored former Mayor
Eugene Brune to speak. Mayor Brune recalled speaking before a group of
people and hearing about the lack of access to city hall by those in
wheelchairs. The following day, he directed the Department of Public Works
to begin work on two ramps for accessibility to city hall and soon thereafter,
he established a committee to work on ways to assist people with
disabilities. He expressed his appreciation for being involved in this
recognition today. Councilor Clingan sponsored former Alderwoman Helen
Corrigan to speak. Mrs. Corrigan said she is a member of the Commission
for Persons with Disabilities in the city, and she thanked the Council for
establishing this yearly honor and spoke briefly about how things were prior
to the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Councilor Clingan
informed everyone that there will be a celebratory flag raising at 5:00 PM on
July 11th on the city hall concourse.
Councilor Strezo spoke about her personal experience in caring for her
elderly grandmother and the challenges that they faced in everyday life. She
is looking forward to additional changes that will be made to aid people with
disabilities. Councilor Burnley said that Somerville has a long history of
struggling to accommodate those with disabilities and he went on to say that
living with a disability affects every day of a person’s life. Councilor Mbah
commented that there’s still a way to go and thanked the commission for all
their work. Councilor Clingan sponsored Holly Simione to speak. Ms.
Simione introduced a youngster who wanted to have a swing at playgrounds
that would accommodate her needs. She said that there will be 7 events for
Disability Pride Month and said that a swing will be hung at each event in
this youngster’s honor.

That the Administration work with the vendor to review the certification and
re-certification processes for affordable housing units and identify ways to
streamline the process and make it less onerous for residents.
Resolution
(ID # 24-1009)
Councilor Wilson commented that the process is onerous and that the
threshold is low, resulting in many people being disqualified. He noted that
vendors are following the guidelines, but he would like to change them in
order to raise the threshold. Councilor Pineda Neufeld noted that the city is
bearing the cost for document translation and that she hopes that other
agencies and language justice organizations get involved.
