By Councilor Ewen-Campen, Councilor Burnley Jr., Councilor Clingan, Councilor Davis, Councilor Mbah, Councilor McLaughlin, Councilor Pineda Neufeld, Councilor Sait, Councilor Scott, Councilor Strezo and Councilor Wilson Commending Arn Franzen on the occasion of his retirement from the Public Space and Urban Forestry Division after more than 20 years of distinguished service. Citation (ID # 24-0903) Councilor Ewen-Campen spoke about Mr. Franzen’s 20-year career with the city and mentioned many of the parks Mr. Franzen has been involved with. Mr. Franzen addressed the Council and thanked them for this acknowledgement, thanked his colleagues in Public Space and Urban Forestry, and several other city departments. He said that together, parks, schoolyards and fields have been transformed for the benefit of the city’s residents. Councilor McLaughlin reflected on his meeting and interactions with Mr. Franzen and thanked him for listening to residents’ concerns about parks. Councilor Wilson recounted how Mr. Franzen was always exhibiting grace under fire when dealing with staff and neighbors, especially when working on the schoolyard at the Healey School. Councilor Clingan noted how receptive Mr. Franzen was when approached about renaming a park in memory of Deanna Cremmin. Councilor Mbah thanked Mr. Franzen for his years of service and Councilor Pineda Neufeld said that Mr. Franzen’s legacy will live on through the many parks in the city. By Councilor Clingan, Councilor Wilson, Councilor Ewen-Campen, Councilor Strezo, Councilor Burnley Jr., Councilor Pineda Neufeld and Councilor Mbah Celebrating the Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act, recognizing July as Disability Pride Month and the 26th of July as Americans with Disabilities Act Day. Resolution (ID # 24-0978) Councilor Clingan commented that it has taken too long to recognize those who advocated for people with disabilities. He sponsored former Mayor Eugene Brune to speak. Mayor Brune recalled speaking before a group of people and hearing about the lack of access to city hall by those in wheelchairs. The following day, he directed the Department of Public Works to begin work on two ramps for accessibility to city hall and soon thereafter, he established a committee to work on ways to assist people with disabilities. He expressed his appreciation for being involved in this recognition today. Councilor Clingan sponsored former Alderwoman Helen Corrigan to speak. Mrs. Corrigan said she is a member of the Commission for Persons with Disabilities in the city, and she thanked the Council for establishing this yearly honor and spoke briefly about how things were prior to the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Councilor Clingan informed everyone that there will be a celebratory flag raising at 5:00 PM on July 11th on the city hall concourse. Councilor Strezo spoke about her personal experience in caring for her elderly grandmother and the challenges that they faced in everyday life. She is looking forward to additional changes that will be made to aid people with disabilities. Councilor Burnley said that Somerville has a long history of struggling to accommodate those with disabilities and he went on to say that living with a disability affects every day of a person’s life. Councilor Mbah commented that there’s still a way to go and thanked the commission for all their work. Councilor Clingan sponsored Holly Simione to speak. Ms. Simione introduced a youngster who wanted to have a swing at playgrounds that would accommodate her needs. She said that there will be 7 events for Disability Pride Month and said that a swing will be hung at each event in this youngster’s honor. APPROVED RESULT: Page 5 of 30
