1 of 3  Urban Agenda  Pre‐Contract Information Form     Project Name: Somerville Fab Lab  Project Contact: Ben Sommer, bsommer@somervillema.gov, [phone removed] x2513  Organization Name, Address: City of Somerville, 93 Highland Ave, Somerville MA 02143  Award Amount: $200,000      Project Overview and Updates    Please provide a brief description of the project’s goals and an overview of activities to be supported  by the Urban Agenda grant.   These funds will support bringing a Fabrication Laboratory—or a “Fab Lab”—to Somerville. A  combination of software and hardware (e.g. 3D printers and laser cutters), a Fab Lab allows  users to explore engineering and design processes in authentic and real‐world contexts by  providing tools that enable users to go from concept to drawing, models to prototype, and  redesign to final product. Fab Labs offer an innovative vocational education experience,  combining the technical with the entrepreneurial in an easy to understand yet high‐tech  environment.  The Fab Lab will consist of three main programming components: an elective course during the  school day, open hours after the school day for the general public and entrepreneurs, and a  youth entrepreneurship program in partnership with a local tech incubator. Funding from EOHED will go towards capital costs such as equipment purchases as well as  working capital for staff and programming.            

2 of 3  Have there been any significant changes or updates to the project since the application was  submitted?   No. Changes are not signifigant in affecting the project. The only changes that have occured  are a result of decreased funding because of the smaller grant award. This caused us to  reduce the year two budget and budget for staffing.     Please provide at least 3 measurable outcomes of the project. (You will be responsible for reporting  on the progress of these outcomes in quarterly reports.) 1) Number of high school students annually enrolled and graduating from "Fab Academy"  elective course. 2) Number of "members" of the general public who make use of the Fab Lab space after  hours, on an annual basis. a) Number of entrepreneurs and businesses supported b) Number of low‐income residents supported 3) Number of students participating in youth entrepreneuship course and projects completed,  on an annual basis.   a) Number of low income youth participating 4) Number of SHS teachers trained.   If your award was less than what was requested in your Urban Agenda application, will you be  seeking supplemental funding sources? If yes, please describe the sources.  Yes, we will be seeking additional funding sources including increased matching funds from  the City of Somerville for  FY17 and private sponsorship through corporate partners in the  future.
