CURTATONE MAYOR COMMUNITY PRESERVATION COMMITTEE FY16 FUNDING RECOMMENDATION FOR HOYT SULLIVAN PLAYGROUND, CITY OF SOMERVILLE PROJECT DESCRIPTION & This project will provide resources for the City of Somerville to renovate and possibly expand the 22,000 square foot Hoyt Sullivan Playground. The renovation will include improving ADA and universal access, new lighting, circulation paths, improving the tree canopy and sustainable practices, providing active and passive recreation with a focus on younger children and improved visual connections to the community path and rail corridor via a new deck overlook. The City’s Department of Public Works will be responsible for maintenance and upkeep. City staff will work with the community to start a Friends group to help with park monitoring and maintenance. ELIGIBILITY Open space/recreational land: This project will rehabilitate and restore open space/recreational land. RECOMMENDED FUNDING On March 23, 2016, by a vote of 6-0, the Community Preservation Committee recommended appropriating $400,000 for this project from the open space and recreational land reserve budget to the control of the City of Somerville Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development for the overall purposes summarized in this document. In addition, the project is in line with the Community Preservation Plan priority to rehabilitate and restore existing recreational land according to need.
