CURTATONE MAYOR COMMUNITY PRESERVATION COMMITTEE FY17 FUNDING RECOMMENDATION FOR BUTTERFLY GARDEN POCKET PARK, CITY OF SOMERVILLE PARKS AND OPEN SPACE DIVISION AND GREEN AND OPEN SOMERVILLE PROJECT DESCRIPTION The City of Somerville and Green and Open Somerville will convert the planting beds on the Summer Street side of the Morse Kelly Park into a pocket park that will support our local pollinators with native plants. ELIGIBILITY Open space/recreation land: This project will rehabilitate recreation land by converting barren planting beds into a pollinator pocket park that can be used for passive recreation. RECOMMENDED FUNDING On April 26, 2017, by a vote of 8-0, the Community Preservation Committee recommended appropriating $13,000 for this project from the open space and recreation land reserve budget to the control of the City of Somerville for the overall purposes summarized in this document. FUNDING CONDITIONS 1. Upon commencement of the Project and as appropriate, the City of Somerville agrees to post a sign stating that the Project was funded through the City of Somerville’s Community Preservation Act program. 2. Interpretive signage is included in the park. 3. A maintenance plan will be developed for the pocket park. 4. The Conservation Commission will be kept informed of progress and provide an advisory role on the project. MEASURES OF SUCCESS The goals of this project are to: • Transform underused City space into a native plantings place where pollinators can live, eat, and reproduce. • Create a passive recreational area where residents can reconnect with nature and receive the benefits nature gives. • Create a space of learning about ecosystems and the importance and pride of being a land steward.
