The meeting took place in the Committee Room and was called to order at 5:30 PM by Alderman Heuston and adjourned at 6:10 PM. Approval of the April 13, 2017 Minutes RESULT: ACCEPTED 203233: Requesting the appointment of Stephen Cafferky to the Fire Reserve List. Mr. Cafferky is a very good candidate who has tried, in the past, to become a fire fighter. He moved to Somerville when he was in the 7th grade. RESULT: APPROVED 203234: Requesting the appointment of Robert J. McGovern to the Licensing Commission. Mr. McGovern has been an attorney for over 5 years and moved into the city a couple of years ago. Mr. Govern was asked what he thought his role would be in this position and how he would serve the City of Somerville. Members raised concerns about conflict of interest and Mr. McGovern stated that he would recuse himself from a case if it involved a business that he deals with as part of his regular work responsibilities. Members also discussed that fact that the other two members on the commission are attorneys, as well, and what that might mean for a balanced commission. This position became available to fill a vacancy created by the departure of a long

The position was advertised on social media and responses from 20 very qualified candidates were received. RESULT: KEPT IN COMMITTEE 203297: Requesting the appointment of Ashley McLain to the Police Reserve List. Ms. McLain told the members that she has always wanted to be a police officer. She is a graduate of Somerville High School and will pursue her academic studies toward a degree in Criminal Justice. Alderman Rossetti asked Ms. McLain to offer to speak to the students at SHS to tell them about her process and being able to fulfill her dream. RESULT: APPROVED 203298: Requesting the appointment of Edna DaCosta to the Police Reserve List. Ms. DaCosta is in the midst of completing her PhD in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at UMass Dartmouth. She is raising her family here and believes in Somerville and feels it is a great place to live. Ms DaCosta speaks multiple languages and has experience in working as a domestic violence and sexual abuse advocate. RESULT: APPROVED 203299: Requesting the appointment of Robert Ciccia to the Board of Health. Mr. Ciccia has been living in Somerville for several years and wants to give back to the community. He wants to promote healthier communities and is very much aware of the nuances involved in healthcare. Mr. Ciccia has a Mexican-Peruvian background which will be quite useful in this very diverse city. Mr. Kress told the committee that there were 68 applicants that showed interest in this position.
