DACA — File 204225

WHEREAS: On October 28, 2010, this Board of Aldermen unanimously adopted a Resolution in support of the passage of the Dream Act by the United States Congress; and WHEREAS: The United States Congress failed to enact the Dream Act; and WHEREAS: President Obama implemented some provisions of the Dream Act by executive order on June 15, 2012, known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (“DACA”), which allowed immigrant children to remain in the United States if they met certain conditions; and WHEREAS: On September 5, 2017, the administration of President Trump announced the termination of DACA, effective in 6 months; and WHEREAS: The Dream Act of 2017, are bipartisan Bills in the United States Senate S1615 and House of Representatives HR3440 which would allow undocumented children to remain in the United States and thereafter provide a pathway to permanent residence and citizenship for those children who meet the criteria of the law; and WHEREAS: The Somerville Board of Aldermen agrees wholeheartedly with the objectives of the Dream Act of 2017; and WHEREAS: Congressman Michael Capuano is a sponsor of the Dream Act of 2017; NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: That the Somerville Board of Aldermen hereby Expresses its sincere thanks to Congressman Capuano for his sponsorship of the Dream Act of 2017, and calls upon the United States Congress to pass the Dream Act of 2017 as soon as possible and asks that the City Clerk send copies of this Resolution to United States Senators Edward Markey and Elizabeth Warren.
