Heuston and adjourned at 6:40 PM.

203234: Requesting the appointment of Robert J. McGovern to the Licensing Commission.
This item was withdrawn.
RESULT:

203895: Requesting the appointment of Sumayya Essack to the Commission for Women.
Ms. Essack said that after the events of last year, she felt the need to get more involved in the
community and she sees this appointment as an opportunity to serve the community. As a
daughter of immigrant parents, she feel that diversity is very important.
RESULT:

204022: Requesting the appointment of Margaret Norcross-Devin to the Commission for
Women.

Ms. Norcross-Devin said that she became aware of the position at a table event. She has worked
in non-profit most of her life. She teaches girls at a young age that they have value and she
would like to help women realize their desires. She talked about road blocks that are visible and
invisible to women.

204023: Requesting the appointment of Patricha Paul to the Commission for Women.
Ms. Paul has been in Somerville for 9 years and is a she is a single mom to a 14 year daughter.
She wants to show her daughter and others that you can be whatever you want to be. She wants
to bring awareness to other single minority moms and let them know they can have a voice just
as much as others.

204327: Requesting the appointment of Cristina Kennedy to the Conservation Commission.
Ms. Kennedy is a lifelong Massachusetts resident who has been in Somerville for 2 years. She
has an environmental background, loves nature and wants to get involved in the community. Ms.
Kennedy was questioned about possible conflicts of interest with her day job and she assured the
committee that there would be no conflicts. Chairman Heuston advised Ms. Kennedy to consult
with the City Solicitor should a question of conflict arise. Currently there are 7 members on the
conservation commission, so Ms. Kennedy could recuse herself if necessary.

APPROVED
204563: Requesting the appointment of Eric Collins to the position of Fire Fighter.
Mr. Collins has been on the Fire Department’s reserve list and will be graduating from the Fire
Academy in March of 2018. He grew up in Somerville and his family still lives here. Mr.
Collins said that he has a sense of duty and purpose and he wants to protect the community. He
has a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and spent time as an intern in the Somerville Police
Department.
