COMMUNITY PRESERVATION COMMITTEE FY18 FUNDING RECOMMENDATION FOR SOMERVILLE COMMUNITY PATH (INVASIVE SPECIES AND TREE CANOPY), CITY OF SOMERVILLE PARKS AND OPEN SPACE DIVISION AND THE FRIENDS OF THE COMMUNITY PATH PROJECT DESCRIPTION This project will incorporate work to improve the quality of the tree canopy and remove invasive species into the design process for the Community Path funded with Community Preservation Act funds. ELIGIBILITY Recreational Land: The Community Path provides land for active recreation in Somerville. RECOMMENDED FUNDING- PRELIMINARY DISCUSSION On March 28, 2018 by a vote of 6-0 the Community Preservation Committee recommended appropriating $15,000 for this project from the undesignated reserve budget to the control of the City of Somerville Parks and Open Space Division for the overall purposes summarized in this document. MEASURES OF SUCCESS The goal of the project is to establish the foundation plantings for the long term ecological health of the Community Path. Success will be measured through the community’s response to the project, the continuation of natural plant successional species development, and the increase in bird and insect habitat.
