COMMUNITY PRESERVATION COMMITTEE FY18 FUNDING RECOMMENDATION FOR WEST SOMERVILLE NEIGHBORHOOD SCHOOL AND BROWN SCHOOL- SCHOOLYARD DESIGN, CITY OF SOMERVILLE PARKS AND OPEN SPACE DIVISION AND SCHOOL DEPARTMENT PROJECT DESCRIPTION This project will develop landscape design plans for the renovation of two schoolyards- Brown and West Somerville Neighborhood Schools. This project was originally proposed by the West Somerville PTA and Improvement Council. ELIGIBILITY Recreational Land: Schoolyards are active recreational land. RECOMMENDED FUNDING- PRELIMINARY DISCUSSION On March 28, 2018 by a vote of 5-1 the Community Preservation Committee recommended appropriating $140,000 for this project, $78,833 from the recreation land reserve budget and $61,167 from the undesignated reserve budget, to the control of the City of Somerville Parks and Open Space Division for the overall purposes summarized in this document. ALIGNMENT WITH FY18 COMMUNITY PRESERVATION PLAN The West Somerville Neighborhood School and the Brown School have the only two schoolyards graded ‘poor’ in the City’s 2016-2021 Open Space and Recreation Plan. Both schools serve immigrant communities with 30% of West Somerville and 15% of Brown students speaking a language other than English as their first language. FUNDING CONDITIONS 1. CPA funds will only be put towards the design of active and passive outdoor recreation uses at both the Brown School and the West Somerville Neighborhood School. MEASURES OF SUCCESS The goal of the project is to provide quality long lasting recreation environments that will offer essential life-enhancing qualities that improve community well-being and the physical and mental health of individual students. The project will be considered a success if the schoolyards serve as a premier example of public schoolyard and park design and if the community has greater overall health and wellness.
