Fire Chief Breen introduced the candidate who was on the reserve list since 2016 and took the exam in 2014. The chief believes the tradesman skills will be quite handy in the Somerville Fire Department for both residential and commercial businesses. Background checks were completed as well as physical exams and aptitude test. Background refresh is required if the original background check is over 6 months and medical exams if over 9 months. The candidate is still operating his plumbing business but slowly shutting it down. He grew up in Somerville in an area where there were several plumbers in the neighborhood. He looks forward to working as a team. All committee members were quite impressed with the candidates resume. The candidate is very serious about fitness. The candidate stated he would feel comfortable if he witnessed something he would report it to the necessary authorities. The committee went into executive session to ask questions about the candidate’s character. No votes were taken in executive session. RESULT: APPROVED 207206: Requesting the appointment of John Blake to the position of Fire Fighter. Chief Breen introduced the candidate who is currently a general manager at Druid Pub. The Chief believes the candidates practical knowledge will be used well in human relation, talking to people, and good with people. The candidate responded to a question from one of the aldermen stating he will treat people the way he wants to be treated. The candidate is not from this country and was asked why he came to America. He came to America when he was 19 to the South side of Chicago and stayed there until he was almost 20 years of age. He then moved to Australia and later moved to America to the Wollaston Beach area. The candidate does yoga and title boxing. He is very community oriented. He also participates in a soccer tournament in Revere every year to raise funds to be donated to the homeless shelter. The committee went into executive session to ask questions about the candidate’s character. No votes were taken in executive session. RESULT: APPROVED 207207: Requesting the appointment of John Driscoll to the position of Fire Fighter. Chief Breen introduced the candidate who graduated from Somerville High School. The candidate’s current position is maintenance mechanic for the Somerville Housing Authority. He is proficient in electrical and carpentry for residential and commercial. The candidate likes to stay involved in the community. Ald. Rossetti asked the candidate if he could find time to go back to the Somerville High School to share with the students what he has done since leaving high school. All committee members were impressed with the candidates resume. The candidate would feel comfortable reporting any matters he witnessed to the appropriate persons. The committee went into executive session to ask questions about the candidate’s character. No votes were taken in executive session. RESULT: APPROVED 207208: Requesting the appointment of John Mucci to the position of Fire Fighter. Chief Breen introduced the candidate who presently a HVAC/Sheet Metal Mechanic. The chief states these are skills needed in the Somerville Fire Department. The candidate is also a nutritionist and personal trainer. He attended UMass for Exercise Health and Wentworth for Science-Industrial Design. The candidate graduated from Woburn High School. He stated his family has been in Somerville since 1907. Somerville has always felt like home for him and has lived in Somerville for 11 years. The candidate, like all the other candidate, was asked if he witnessed something if he would be comfortable reporting to the necessary authorities. The

No votes were taken in executive session. RESULT: APPROVED 207209: Requesting the appointment of Rafael Flores to the position of Fire Fighter. Chief Breen introduced the candidate who is a graduate of Prospect Hill Academy and received his AS in Fire Science and Protection and Psychology from Bunker Hill Community College. Ald. Rossetti suggested he find time to go back to PHA to share with the students what he has been doing since graduation. Ald. Scott talked about the legacy with minority families served by PHA. The candidate was asked why he had an interest in being a fire fighter. The candidate responded that he saw fire fighters were able to help people and learn how to apply themselves. The candidate has volunteered in the community by helping out with toy drives and fundraising. He would be comfortable reporting something that he witnessed to the appropriate persons. The committee went into executive session to ask questions about the candidate’s character. No votes were taken in executive session. RESULT: APPROVED
