A small-scale test version of the virus that is coming to Davis Square at ArtBeat. Don't worry! We've also got heaps of fantastic music, dance, food, activities lined up. Stay tuned! Did we get your attention? Oh good. As you may have heard, we're teaming up with the office of Sustainability and Environment for our "Consumed" theme for this year's ArtBeat Festival (7/13). We will have many activities, exhibits and installations addressing how we all consume - with a focus on how this affects our planet. The goal is to get folks thinking and promote positive change! One installation will be "Baby Virus" by artist Wen Yu. Yu's piece will address how our carbon footprint affects global warming, and thus affects the global virus/disease landscape. Yu is interested in addressing how climate change is already affecting the disease landscape (the spread of diseases like dengue, for example) - but also wants to focus on what we all can do to help change this. The warm weather is upon us and that means our non-stop festival machine is in motion. Two of our biggest festivals are ArtBeat and Ignite, and we'd be tickled if you'd consider helping us out and volunteering. Thanks in advance! The ever-dapper Grupo Los Nitidos will be performing at Carnival this Sunday in East Somerville. Head on down to "Eastie" this Sunday (June 2) for Carnival. From 2-6pm on Broadway between McGrath Highway and Pennsylvania Ave. We'll have two stages of music, interactive activities, a flea and artisan market - and a slew of community organizations. Carnaval is organized by the City of Somerville, the Somerville Arts Council, and East Somerville Main Streets. Acts include, Grupo Los Nitidos , Grooveristy , Tarciso Alves & Forró Roots , Veronica Robles Female Mariachi , Torito Pinto Music Band and Camilla Latin Jazz. Listen to a concert from our very own string section from El Sistema and learn capoeira with Sinha Capoeira . Beyond that, we've got international eats to die for, a bouncy house and a fire truck to explore! Read more details about the lineup here: Carnaval. Eat, drink - and support Venezuela! Nibble stars Carolina Garcia and Carolina Salinas invite you to eat arepas this Sunday and support their native Venezuela, which is experiencing the worst humanitarian crisis in the Western Hemisphere. Don't miss this delicious philanthropic event! After you've checked out Carnival this Sunday, head to Bow Market to enjoy delicious Venezuelan arepas while listening to traditional Venezuelan music by Juan Carlos Ruiz -all while supporting the people of Venezuela during a time of devastating hardship. It will be a good time for a great cause. The masterminds of this event are "Las Carolinas," two Venezuelan natives who are part of the Nibble team and soon-to-be star chefs at the Nibble Kitchen in Bow Market. Currently in Venezuela there are food shortages, electricity blackouts, lack of medical supplies, and a security crisis. A good overview article is here. Nibble Fundraiser for Venezuela Bow Market, Union Square, June 2, 4-8pm Jazz & Blues on deck: Plan your picnic now Italy native Giuseppe Paradiso has performed internationally at festivals including the Panama Jazz Festival and the Newport Jazz Festival. Don't miss his latest band, Meridian 71, at Joe's Jazz and Blues Fest on Sat., June 15. The brain child of Mayor Joe Curtatone, who played trumpet in the Somerville High School Jazz Band, the annual Jazz & Blues Fest will take over Nathan Tufts Park (Powderhouse Park) in Somerville from noon- 6pm on July 15th. A great free concert in one of our city's prettiest parks: Can you really see any good reason not to go? Exactly. Among the broad line up will be Meridian 71, an eclectic and international ensemble led by Italian drummer and composer Giuseppe Paradiso. The band's distinctive music is characterized by ongoing research into various music traditions and cultures, including jazz and improvised music to American, Mediterranean and African. We have teamed up with the awesome folks at the Somerville Flea to present a trio of night markets into the mix this season. The first one took place in Union Square on the evening following Porchfest, and was a massive success. Up next are two more night markets, which will be filled with one-of-a-kinds wares, music, and even a beer garden. So mark your calendars!
