CPC Funding Recommendation City Hall Change of Scope FINAL — File 208856
COMMUNITY PRESERVATION COMMITTEE CHANGE OF SCOPE RECOMMENDATION FOR
FY15 AWARD FOR CITY HALL REHABILITATION, CAPITAL PROJECTS DIVISION
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
In FY15, the Community Preservation Committee recommended, and the then Board of Aldermen
approved, a $200,000 award of Community Preservation Act funds for the rehabilitation of City Hall. The
design was intended to include the restoration of exterior building elements, upgrade of mechanical
systems, and upgrade of life safety and handicapped accessibility. On June 22, 2019, the Community
Preservation Committee recommended amending the scope of this project to support the conceptual
design of the rehabilitation of City Hall as well as the 1895 Building, which is also historically significant.
The City of Somerville Capital Projects Division has requested an additional $2,000,000 for owner’s
project manager professional services as well as design, and engineering services to support the
renovation of the 1895 Building, City Hall and the Edgerly School, which is under consideration by the
City Council. The CPA funds would contribute conceptual design funding to this project and would only
be used for the 1895 Building and City Hall.
ELIGIBILITY
Historic resources: This project will rehabilitate two historic buildings. City Hall is a local historic district
and the 1895 Building has been determined to be historically significant by the Somerville Historic
Preservation Commission and the Massachusetts Historic Commission.
RECOMMENDATION
On June 22, 2019 by a vote of 8-0 the Community Preservation Committee recommended changing the
scope of the FY15 funding award for the rehabilitation of City Hall to be amended to support the
conceptual design for the rehabilitation of City Hall and additionally the 1895 Building for the overall
purposes summarized in this document.
