Others present: Khushbu Webber-Mayor’s Office, Fire Chief Breen, Deputy Fire Chief Major, Candace
Cooper-Personnel, candidate Randy Oliver and candidate Daniel Roche.
Chairperson Rossetti informed the members that future meetings will take place on Wednesdays,
but not before a regular City Council meeting. The meeting dates for the remainder of the fiscal
year are February 5 and 19, March 4 and 18, April 1 and 15 and May 6 and 20.
The meeting was held in the Committee Room and was called to order at 6:02 p.m. by Chairperson
Rossetti and adjourned at 6:45 p.m.

209547: Requesting confirmation of the appointment of Daniel Roche to the position of
Firefighter.
Fire Chief Breen introduced the candidate to the committee. Mr. Roche graduated from Somerville High
School. Has an associate’s degree from in Criminal Justice from Bunker Community College. He is an
active volunteer for basketball and football with students in grades 6-8th He currently works as a
bartender at Casey’s in Somerville. The candidate had a mentor at the high school who inspired him to
become a fire fighter. This candidate comes from the 2016 reserve list.
The Committee entered into Executive Session to review protected personnel information and/or to
discuss matters related to the individual candidate pursuant to MGL c30A s21(a)(1). No votes taken in
the Executive Session.
Councilor Scott asked Ms. Cooper and Chief Breen about those who may be retiring from the fire
department. There are approximately 29 eligible from the fire department that could retire. One fire
fighter is going through the retirement process now. The certification process has begun for a 9-person
reserve list which may be completed in June.

209548: Requesting confirmation of the appointment of Randy Oliver to the position of
Firefighter.
Fire Chief Breen introduced the candidate to the committee. Mr. Oliver graduated from the Minuteman
Regional High School in Lexington. He currently lives in Somerville and his two children attend
Prospect Hill Academy. Mr. Oliver has family members who were also in civil service. Mr. Oliver will
also bring technical repair skills to the fire department. He holds an ASE (Automotive Service
Excellence) certificate and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) certificate.
