Response to #209644 re GLX mitigation requests
Honorable President and Members of the City Council:
Please see below the information provided in response to agenda #209644 (“That the Administration update this
Council by February 25, 2020, of any negotiated relief as it relates to the Department of Transportation’s
recently announced GLX delayed timeline and resultant impact to the city’s residents and businesses”).
The following list includes all of the requests the City has made to the MBTA to mitigate the changes in the
bridge opening/closing schedule. We are waiting on a response from the MBTA and will update you when we
receive it.
MOBILITY
1. MBTA monthly passes provided to project abutters / SHS students / SHS staff / City Hall staff
2. MBTA bus service is offered fare-free on Route 88, 89, 90, 95 during bridge closure
3. Temporary satellite parking is expanded on Homans site for SHS /City Hall
4. North - South shuttle service is provided for duration of bridge closure
5. Temporary satellite parking is provided on Summer Street site for SHS / City Hall
BUSINESS IMPACTS
1. Universal local merchant gift card program launched ("NIFT" example from Columbia
Gas)
2. MBTA sponsors spring "Ball for Squares" event
3. MBTA sponsors spring Magoun Square event
The following list is additional relief the City has negotiated outside of the mitigation requests:
1. School Street closure not permitted until Washington Street re-opens
2. School Street pedestrian bridge is maintained for duration of overlapping bridge closure
3. GLX budget pays for Fire Department overtime costs
4. GLX provides temporary fire apparatus location
5. GLX performs traffic modeling for various 2-way scenarios
6. GLX continues to provide Traffic Control Police Details at locations requested by SPD
