Describe how you will use these resources and what impact they will have on your virtual programming/ learning. A. Urban Ecology Field Kits The Urban Ecology program is a series of workshops designed to facilitate the development of landscape literacy and environmental appreciation through hands-on exploration and creation. The program is intergenerational and consists of three workshops. Each workshop has three 5
Somerville Public Library June 19, 2020 components: an introductory meeting via Zoom, an outdoor field exercise patrons do on their own time, and a come-together meeting via Zoom to share experiences and results. Workshops can stand alone or be attended as part of the series. Patrons will pick up the Kit from the library either before or shortly after the first Zoom meeting. Somerville is a densely-populated urban environment, and as such is a great place to explore the interaction of nature with the built environment. We hope to use this program to encourage patrons to explore and connect with the outdoors and with one another safely. These kits also tie into explorations of our library garden program. The Urban Ecology Program was Developed by PLIX (https://plix.media.mit.edu), a project of the MIT Media Lab. This program will be led by staff librarians who have attended the PLIX program training. B. Take and Make Take and Make are STEAM projects for patrons to complete at home. As part of our Summer Reading program, we would like to offer four Take and Make kits, with materials and instructions, that patrons can pick up with contactless pickup. Each project will have a Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and/or Math component that will be discussed in the instructions. Projects will be open ended and creative, and will prompt additional exploration for children and families. This grant will enable us to distribute these kits to our community. C. Makey Makey STEAM Kits Makey Makeys provide a hands-on lesson in circuits and coding that we will offer as a live Zoom program to middle grade students and their families. Makey Makeys mimic a keyboard and mouse to allow everyday objects to control a computer. This workshop will walk through how to use Makey Makeys to create a banana piano, and then encourage attendees to use what they have around the house to create even more elaborate musical interfaces. We anticipate offering this program as part of our existing middle grade book club. Patrons will first register for the program and then be able to check out a Makey Makey kit, picking it up through contactless pickup. This program will be led by library staff. . 6
