Somerville Library Outdoor
Wi-Fi Area
Design
The Somerville Library Outdoor Wi-Fi Area has been updated to a design that uses
tables and umbrellas, rather than a physical built structure. The space will include 4
workstations, each with a chair, table, umbrella, and heater. Low walls made from
pallets will provide protection from wind. Each workstation will have an ADA
compliant entrance that is wider than 32”. The total area will be approximately 12ft
by 12ft allowing enough space for social distancing between the tables.
Safety
In order to ensure the space is operated safely, CultureHouse and the Somerville
Library will develop clear procedures and guidelines.
COVID-19
In addition to social distanced tables, any visitors to the space will be required to
wear masks. Library personnel will sanitizatize high touch surfaces like laptops in
between use. A system for signing up to use the space can be implemented to limit
use times and ensure proper contact tracing. Somerville Library staff will be present
in the space during operating hours to ensure COVID guidelines are being followed
and maintained. As guidelines change, staff will make the necessary shifts to ensure
the safety of staff and visitors.
Heaters
Access to reliable internet is critical, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic as
people attend school, look for jobs, and access essential services online. It is
essential to have heat in the space to make it comfortable to use through the winter.
To heat the workspace to a comfortable temperature, we will use electric patio
heaters. Because they use radiant heat, they have no flames and so do not pose a
threat of ignition. They also include a safety shut-off in case of tipping. The heat
lamps will be on only when the Library is actively staffing the space. When the
library closes, the heaters will be turned off. All power cords and outlets will be
appropriately rated to safely power the heaters.
Inclement Weather
The space will only operate when no major weather events are predicted. When
there is a light drizzle or rain umbrellas will protect visitors. During snowstorms and
heavy rain, umbrellas will be closed and tied up properly. Each umbrella will be
attached to a heavy base with the tension screw. In the case of strong winds or
severe hurricanes, blizzards, or tropical storms the umbrellas will be brought inside.
