1 CITY OF SOMERVILLE ORDINANCE NO. 2021-_____ In City Council: - AN ORDINANCE AMENDING SECTION 10-1 and DELETING SECTION 10-1.1 OF CHAPTER 10, ARTICLE I – POLICE Be it ordained by the City Council, in session assembled, that Chapter 10, Article I, is hereby amended as follows: Sec. 10-1. - Police department organization. The sworn ranks of the police department shall consist of a chief of police and not more than the following: two deputy chiefs of police, six captains, 11 lieutenants, and 16 sergeants;, and patrol officers. and the mayor and city council shall endeavor to provide not less than 130 patrolmen at all times. The chief shall devote his or her full time to the position. Patrolmen Patrol officers shall be appointed as soon as practicable, whenever such vacancy arises. Sec. 10-1.1. - Alternate number of lieutenants. Notwithstanding the provisions of section 10-1 above, there shall be not less than 12 lieutenants in the police department until such time as one of the 12 shall retire, resign or otherwise vacate the position; thereafter, the provisions of this section shall become null and void, and the provisions of section 10-1 shall apply.
