The Powder House Circle project is anticipated to reduce collisions in the high-crash intersection, reducing emergency reponse calls. It will
utilize low-cost flexible traffic delineators, which are anticipated to experience a modest annual attrition rate and will require intermittent
replacement. High-durability pavement markings will be used to reduce maintenance costs over time.
Powder House Circle Quick-Build Safety Upgrades
Powder House Circle is consistently ranked as having the highest crash rate of any City-owned interesection in Somerville. It is commonly
cited as an impediment to middle-school and high-school students' ability to safely walk or bike to school.
This quick-build project will use pavement markings, flexible delineator posts and signage changes to transform the high-crash, City-
owned Powder House Circle into a slower, safer New England roundabout design featuring continuous protected bike lanes.
OSPCD- Mobility
This project will leverage the City's current College Avenue sidewalk & street reconstruction project, which has a project limit just south of
Powder House Circle. The combination of these two projects will transform street safety on a major regional commuter cut-through route
in Somerville. Furthermore, the City's sidewalk and street reconstruction program is anticipated to rebuild upper College Avenue (north of
the Circle) as well as Broadway (on either side of the Circle) between 2022 and 2024. Powder House Circle sits at the nexus between these
critical local and regional links.

The project schedule anticipates a summer construction start, with a small possibility that a contractor could begin work in June 2021. The majority of project
activities are anticipated for July and August 2021, with the goal of completing the project in August 2021.
