The work will premier in September 2021 in Chuckie Harris Park in Somerville, MA. Collaborators, Emily Beattie, Rosa Weinberg, and U- meleni Mhlaba-Adebo hold up a speculative future in which a contagious fungus has been found to eradicate biases as a long term symptom. During Hyphae, we collaboratively build a new world with the audiences. Witnessing Hyphae allows the contagion to spread widely through the audience. Our larger goal is to evoke an audience-performer reflection on bias and in-group behavior and for that reflection to echo post-performance. The structure of the contagion-performance includes identifying bias, breaking biased thought, and rebuilding a new connected thought pattern through improvisation. Movement, text, sound, and audience interactive sections of the work are the resonant carriers. The public in the park will witness the text and movement as public art. Hyphae is interactive and audiences will be invited to participate by logging onto a posted site for participate. This imaginative solo is meant for collective dreaming and the design of the work encourages people to join in even impromtu. Financial benefits: Audiences that come to the area will pay for parking and could frequent restaurants in East Somerville. The performance will keep people in the park longer than usual which could result in patronage of the nearby area.
