COMMUNITY PRESERVATION COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION FOR
Junction Park Expansion Design Services
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The City of Somerville Public Space and Urban Forestry Division (PSUF) is seeking seed funding for
design and engineering services for the expansion of Somerville Junction Park, combining an existing
0.6 acre passive park with an adjacent 0.83 acre city‐owned lot that had been used for parking to create
new park amenities adjacent to the MBTA Somerville Community Path.
ELIGIBILITY
Open space/recreation land: This project would create new recreational land and provide new amenities.
RECOMMENDATION
On November 17, 2021 by a vote of 8‐0‐0 the Community Preservation Committee recommended that
PSUF be awarded $100,000 of Community Preservation Act funds for design and engineering services
for the expansion of Junction Park, as described in their application presented in October, 2021, from
the following accounts:

ALIGNMENT WITH COMMUNITY NEEDS
The project will address Somerville’s Climate Forward Plan by expanding the tree canopy and
improving stormwater drainage. It is also consistent with priorities expressed in the Open Space and
Recreation Plan and Community Preservation Plan, including improving accessibility for all members of
the community, increasing community access to water play, fitness equipment, and community garden
space, engaging the artist community, incorporating sustainable practices, and leveraging state grant
funding.
