COMMUNITY PRESERVATION COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION FOR
Glen Park Community Garden Expansion
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The City of Somerville Public Space and Urban Forestry Division (PSUF) is seeking construction funding
for the expansion of the community garden at Glen Park. The proposed improvements include
abandoning Palmer Avenue, installing a new accessible parking and garden utility area, new accessible
raised beds, a seating area, and doubling the amount of existing garden area.
ELIGIBILITY
Open Space and Recreation: The project will create open space and recreational amenities.
RECOMMENDATION
On November 17, 2021 by a vote of 8‐0‐0 the Community Preservation Committee recommended that
PSUF be awarded $210,200 of Community Preservation Act funds for construction to expand the
community garden at Glen Park, as described in their application presented in October, 2021 from the
following accounts:

FUNDING CONDITIONS
ADA and MAAB regulations must be considered in all construction plans.
Any associated parking will not be located on the project site.
Community meetings will be held to consider alternative uses for the site, including active and
passive recreation.
Upon commencement of the Project and as appropriate, the City will post a sign stating that
the Project was funded through the City of Somerville’s Community Preservation Act program.

ALIGNMENT WITH COMMUNITY NEEDS
The City’s Open Space and Recreation Plan highlights the high demand for community gardens across
the city. The Glen Park Community Garden is the only garden serving the East Somerville community
and the existing plots are currently oversubscribed. This expansion will help relieve the demand for
community garden space in this area of the city.
