CITY OF SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS KATJANA BALLANTYNE MAYOR JILL LATHAN ERIC WEISMAN ACTING DPW COMMISSIONER DIRECTOR OF OPERATIONS 1 Date: January 20, 2022 RE: DPW Commissioner responding to City Council requests from recent letter 1.13.22 Agenda Item 212801 That the Commissioner of Public Works replace any non-working street lights along Broadway, from McGrath Highway to Main Street.  The DPW met with the City’s streetlight maintenance contractor this fall. The contractor provided a quote of $119,200 to repair six lights on Broadway. These repairs would require the excavation and trenching of parts of Broadway to feed the streetlights. The next step for these lights is to identify funding and to work with Purchasing on contracting for the repairs. Agenda Item 212819 That the Commissioner of Public Works, the Director of Procurement and Contracting Services, and the Director of Mobility report to the Legislative Matters Committee on enforcement of and annual reporting on the Ordinance to Safeguard Vulnerable Road Users.  This has already been submitted. Agenda Item 212842 That the Commissioner of Public Works address reports of trash barrels being picked up by recycling trucks.  This fall, the City’s trash and recycling contractor changed its standard operating procedure and dedicated all its vehicles (including both those marked as Trash vehicles and those marked as Recycling vehicles) to clearing and dumping all recycling first and then then shifting all vehicles to clearing and dumping all trash. This is a change from the old procedure of doing both services simultaneously, but with dedicated equipment. The purpose of this change is to shorten the time that trash and recycling vehicles are in the street. As a result, it may appear that sometimes trash is being loaded into a “Recycling” truck, and sometimes that recycling is being loaded into a trash truck. Agenda Item 212843 That the Commissioner of Public Works update this Council on the sidewalk snow-shoveling pilot which was included in the FY2022 budget.

CITY OF SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC WORKS KATJANA BALLANTYNE MAYOR 2  The DPW submitted a memo outlining our plan for a sidewalk clearing pilot in November. Since then we have met with the new Administration and reviewed the plan and discussed any necessary outreach and coordination with other departments that was necessary. The DPW had an existing vendor in place to cover the snow removal portion of the pilot. Snow pilot started Sunday January 30, 2022. Agenda Item 212848 That the Director of Parks and Recreation respond to Item #211452 regarding re-opening parks and playgrounds.  This item was from 3.25.21. Parks & Playgrounds opened Spring 2021. Water features get turned on usually Memorial Day Weekend weather permitting.
