Charles Femino   Chief of Police        Jul 14, 2022      Honorable City Council Members       RE:   Agenda Items 213856 and 213854 (Jul 12, 2022 Finance Committee Meeting) –  Requesting acceptance of a $22,692 grant, with required match, from the Metro Mayors  Coalition Shannon Initiative to the Police Department for youth violence prevention;  Requesting approval of a transfer of $7,076 from the Police Overtime Account to the Grant  Match Account for the Metro Mayor Coalition Shannon Grant match requirement      Dear Council Members:    Please accept this communication as an official response to Councilors McLaughlin, Pineda  Neufeld, and Kelly’s information request regarding Agenda Items 213856 and 213854.    Councilor McLaughlin –   In FY23, SPD will be using Shannon Grant funding for the following community‐based  initiatives  Strategies  Programs and Initiatives  Case Management, Street  Outreach, or Intervention  ‐ Community safety meetings, in coordination with the  Racial and Social Justice Department  ‐ Walk & Talk with youth throughout each ward    Community Mobilization  ‐ Gang and Gun Violence Education and Training  Workshops for parents/guardians and youth that will  address risk factors, Somerville stats, community  resources, opportunities for conversations with  community members affected by community  violence.    City of Somerville Police Department 220 Washington Street Somerville, MA 02143 [phone removed] www.somervillepd.com
o Online pre‐recorded workshops  o In‐person workshops    Education & Employment  ‐ Homework help/ tutoring sessions     Positive Youth Development  & Recreation  ‐ Aug 3, 2022 ‐ SPD Basketball Game with youth living  in the Mystic Housing Area (Mystic Activity Center)  ‐ Aug 6, 2022 ‐ 13th Annual Shannon Grant Basketball  Tournament (see attached flyer)  ‐ Periodic basketball games beyond the summer        Councilor Pineda Neufeld and Kelly –   We appreciate the questions asked at the July 12, 2022 meeting.  Unfortunately, we will  not be able to provide answers to those questions today because our key staff member  involved in data questions is out sick.  Given the questions are primarily about data in the  grant application, we do not anticipate that the responses to these questions would impact  how the funds are being used in FY23.  Therefore, we are requesting that the City Council  approve the grant acceptance and transfer request at tonight’s meeting.  SPD appreciates  the importance of answering these questions and will prioritize getting answers to these  questions as soon as possible.  Thank you for your consideration.
