CITY OF SOMERVILLE DOG RULES June 23, 2021 STATE LAWS AND MUNICIPAL ORDINANCES RELATING TO DOGS: (from the 2012 brochure: http://archive.somervillema.gov/sites/default/files/DogBrochure2012.pdf) 1. All dogs over the age of 6 months must be licensed by the City Clerk’s Office, and licenses must be renewed each year in January (M.G.L. Ch. 140, Sec. 137). 2. All dogs must be vaccinated against rabies (M.G.L. Ch. 140, Sec. 145B). 3. All dogs must be leashed at all times within the city except in posted Off-Leash Recreational Areas (City Ord. 3-34). 4. No dogs are allowed in schoolyards and churchyards. (City Ord. 3-32). 5. No dogs are allowed in city parks at which “No Dogs Allowed” signs are posted (City Ord. 12-51). 6. All dog owners must pick up after their dogs at all times (City Ord. 3-38). 7. All dog owners must follow all Off-Leash Recreational Area regulations (ORLA) (City Ord. 3- 34). ADDITIONAL DOG RULES APPLICABLE TO ALL DOG PARKS (ORLA’s) Established by the DPW Commissioner per Somerville Code of Ordinances Section 12-51: 1. Dog parks are open from 8 am to 10 pm. 2. No access allowed from 10:00 pm until 8:00 am. 3. Each person is limited to 3 dogs at a time. 4. Dogs must wear a collar with a valid license at all times and be current on all vaccinations. 5. Dogs must be leashed when entering and exiting the area. 6. Dog owners must have a leash in hands at all times. 7. Owners must have their dog in view and under physical and/or vocal control. 8. No aggressive dogs allowed. 9. No dogs in heat allowed. 10. Dogs must be at least 4 months old to enter. 11. No excessive barking. Please respect our neighbors. 12. Dogs must never be left unattended. 13. Owners must pick up all feces immediately and dispose of them in a trash receptacle. 14. Use dog parks at your own risk. The City of Somerville is not responsible for injury or damage arising from use of a dog park. 15. Owners are legally and financially responsible for their dogs at all times. 16. Violators of these rules are subject to removal. SPECIAL ADDITIONAL RULE RELATIVE TO ED LEATHERS PARK: Established by the DPW Commissioner per Somerville Code of Ordinances Section 12-51 1. No more than 5 total dogs allowed in Ed Leathers dog park at a time. Violations of any of these rules are subject to a $50 fine for each offense (Per Somerville Code of Ordinances 12-51; 3-24; 3-38; 1-11)
