COMMUNITY PRESERVATION COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION FOR Somerville Museum FY25 Collections Conservation PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Somerville Museum requests CPA funds to undertake three projects related to the preservation of artifacts that are significant to Somerville’s history: 1) preservation of archives housed in the Museum’s document room, 2) restoration of the Stone Family suite of furniture, and 3) restoration of the decorative wrought iron rails that adorn the stairs leading to the Central Street entrance to the building. Following the renovation of the Museum’s storage area and the installation of climate control throughout the building, the Museum is now able to return their collections from outside storage and to repair damage caused by years of improper storage. Further, restoration of the exterior wrought iron rails will preserve an element of the building that is covered under the Preservation Restriction the City now holds. ELIGIBILITY Historic Resources: This project would preserve artifacts which were found by the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission to be significant to the history of Somerville. RECOMMENDATION On December 11, 2024, by a vote of 8-0-0, the Community Preservation Committee recommended to City Council that the Somerville Museum be awarded $114,259 of Community Preservation Act funds from the Historic Preservation reserve to conserve its collections and restore the wrought iron railing. FUNDING CONDITIONS The project will follow the General Conditions outlined in a Memorandum of Agreement with the responsible department. Project-specific conditions include the following:  Artifacts that have been preserved using CPA funds may not be sold or disposed of without first obtaining City approval.
