CPC Funding Rec Veterans Cemetery FY25 — File 25-0059
COMMUNITY PRESERVATION COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION FOR
Veterans Cemetery FY25 Conditions Assessment
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The City of Somerville Department of Veterans’ Services requests funding to initiate the restoration of
the Veterans Memorial Cemetery and veterans monuments located throughout the city. A Preservation
Survey by a historic preservation conservator will evaluate the condition of the cemetery and several
additional memorials across the city and provide a recommended treatment plan. The study is a first
step, providing a guide for the appropriate preservation and restoration of monuments which honor
Somerville residents who have served the country over many wars. The Preservation Survey will ensure
that all elements are treated with the care and attention they require.
ELIGIBILITY
Historic Resources: This project would preserve monuments which were found by the Somerville
Historic Preservation Commission to be significant to the history of Somerville.
RECOMMENDATION
On December 11, 2024, by a vote of 8-0-0, the Community Preservation Committee recommended to
City Council that the Department of Veterans’ Services be awarded $18,500 of Community Preservation
Act funds from the Historic Preservation reserve to prepare a condition assessment of the Veterans
Memorial Cemetery and veterans monuments.
FUNDING CONDITIONS
The project will follow the General Conditions outlined in a Memorandum of Agreement with the
responsible department. Project-specific conditions include the following:
The Veterans’ Department will coordinate with PSUF for the preservation of the Veterans
Cemetery and monuments in City parks, and with DCR for monuments located on property
under DCR’s jurisdiction.
