Re:
Assembly Square Street Names
Date: April 18, 2013
____________________________________________________________________________
Federal Realty Investment Trust (FRIT), in consultation with the City’s Engineering, Police and
Fire Departments, has proposed a series of names for the streets within the Assembly Row
development (see Exhibit A). This office has reviewed the list of proposed names and
recommends the formal adoption of these names for the development. In accordance with this
recommendation, we submit the following materials in support of a petition to rename existing
Assembly Square Drive and New Street in order to prevent traffic and safety issues from
occurring as a result of the new naming system.
Assembly Square Drive
Assembly Square Drive currently extends from the intersection with Mystic Avenue to a
termination at the intersection of New Road. Previously, Assembly Square Drive had continued
until the intersection with Foley Street, however this last section (between New Road and Foley
Street) was discontinued as a public way by vote of the Board of Aldermen on July 12, 2012.
To avoid confusion to motorists and delivery personnel and to standardize reference locations for
the Police and Fire Departments, we recommend that the existing Assembly Square Drive be
renamed to Grand Union Boulevard. In this way, the same name will be used for the current
continuous roadway throughout its entire length, rather than changing its name at the intersection
with New Street.
New Street
Similarly, we request that New Street be changed to Revolution Drive. New Street was a
placeholder name for a prior subdivision plan and was inadvertently adopted as its final name.
Now that FRIT has constructed a logical network of streets in the area, renaming New Street
would allow for a seamless continuation of Revolution Drive.
Thank you for your consideration of these requested changes. Please contact me if you need any
additional information.
