A resolution supporting permanent daylight saving time. WHEREAS: The Sunshine Protection Act of 2025, previously introduced by Senator Ed Markey in 2022, seeks to eliminate the biannual clock changes by establishing permanent Daylight Saving Time, thereby reducing disruptions to daily routines and mitigating the adverse effects associated with seasonal time adjustments; and WHEREAS: Research and community feedback suggest that the transition to permanent Daylight Saving Time can contribute to energy conservation, improved public health, and a reduction in the risk of accidents linked to sleep disruptions and time-change-related confusion; and WHEREAS: The City of Somerville is dedicated to fostering innovative policies that enhance the quality of life for its residents, promote economic efficiency, and ensure consistency in scheduling for businesses, schools, and community activities; and WHEREAS: Permanent Daylight Saving Time is anticipated to simplify timekeeping across state and national borders, reduce administrative burdens, and strengthen the synchronization of civic and commercial operations; and WHEREAS: The Sunshine Protection Act aligns with Somerville’s commitment to progressive, evidence-based solutions that address contemporary challenges and improve community well-being; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: That the Somerville City Council formally supports Senator Ed Markey’s Sunshine Protection Act as a necessary and forward-thinking measure to adopt permanent Daylight Saving Time, thereby providing a more stable and predictable temporal framework for our community; AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That the City Clerk shall send a copy of this resolution to the Massachusetts congressional delegation.
