CITY OF SOMERVILLE ORDINANCE NO. 2025- IN CITY COUNCIL: ________, 2025 Be it ordained by the City Council, in session assembled, that Chapter 2, Article VI, Division 3 of the code of ordinances of the City of Somerville is amended as follows by inserting the following section. Sec. 2-325. – Cost of living increases for elected officials. (a) Beginning on January 1, 2026 and annually on January 1 in each subsequent year, the annual compensation for the members of the City Council, the City Council president, the members of the School Committee, the School Committee chair, and the mayor shall increase by two percent or equal to the increase, if any, as of January 1 of the preceding calendar year, of the annual average consumer price index for all urban consumers Boston-Lawrence-Salem, MA-NH, as published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, United States Department of Labor, whichever is less. The increased amount shall be the new base salary each year for elected officials. (b) If the Municipal Compensation Advisory Board has issued a recommendation regarding compensation for the office of city councilor, City Council president, School Committee member, School Committee chair, or mayor pursuant to § 2-279, that recommendation shall supersede the automatic percentage increase. (c) Notwithstanding the provisions of this section, the City Council may increase or reduce salaries in a manner consistent with relevant Massachusetts General Laws or Special Acts. (d) Notwithstanding the provisions of this section, the City Council may, by two-thirds vote, waive the pay increase for the subsequent year. Approved: President Approved: Mayor
