Resolution - Greek Spirit — File 25-0851

A RESOLUTION DECLARING GREEK SPIRIT WEEK WHEREAS: Greek Independence Day commemorates the 1821 Greek uprising against the Ottoman Empire following nearly four centuries of occupation; and WHEREAS: The Greek War of Independence was fought from 1821 to 1829, with Greece officially recognized as a sovereign state under the 1832 Treaty of Constantinople; and WHEREAS: Somerville boasts a large and wonderful community of residents of Greek descent that has contributed an incredible amount to our city over the years; and WHEREAS: The Commonwealth of Massachusetts is commemorating Greek Independence Day on April 25, 2025; and WHEREAS: The 29th Greek Independence Day Parade will take place in Boston on April 27, 2025; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: That the Somerville City Council hereby extends a very happy Greek Independence Day to all who celebrate; AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That the Somerville City Council hereby declares April 21, 2025, to April 27, 2025, to be Greek Spirit Week; AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED: That a copy of this resolution be forwarded by the City Clerk to the Federation of Hellenic-American Societies of New England.
