COMMUNITY PRESERVATION COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION FOR Buddy’s Diner Preservation FY26 PROJECT DESCRIPTION The owner of Buddy’s Diner requests funds to repair the sewer and consult with a historic preservation architect to identify the steps needed to restore the historic building located at 113 Washington Street and enable it to reopen. CPA funds will be used to repair damage caused when utility work in front of the site crushed the sewer pipes forcing the business to close. The project will stabilize and preserve a beloved historic resource in Somerville, a 1929 Worcester Lunch Car which has occupied this location since 1951, a visible landmark of Somerville’s working-class heritage and architectural history. ELIGIBILITY Historic Resources: This project would rehabilitate and preserve a historic building. RECOMMENDATION On 12/29/25 by a vote of 5-0, the Community Preservation Committee recommended to City Council that Buddy’s Diner be awarded $74,365 of Community Preservation Act funds from the Historic Preservation Reserve to restore the siding on its building at 113 Washington Street, as described in their FY26 application. FUNDING CONDITIONS The project will follow the General Conditions outlined in a Grant Agreement between the City and the Grantee. The following project-specific conditions apply to this project: 1. The Grantee will consent to general conditions provided in the Grant Agreement, which shall include a provision to ensure long-term preservation of the historic asset. 2. The Worcester Lunch Car will not be relocated outside of Somerville.
