City of Somerville Community Preservation Committee COMMUNITY PRESERVATION COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION FOR Somerville Museum FY26 Artifacts Conservation PROJECT DESCRIPTION Following the renovation of the Museum’s storage area and the installation of climate control throughout the building, the Museum is now able to return their collections from outside storage and to repair damage caused by years of improper storage. The Somerville Museum requests CPA funds to undertake the restoration of several artifacts in its collections, including the following:  Portrait of Mary Russell by H. Bundy  3 original frames for portraits of the Russell family  Outer frame for the portrait of Columbus Tyler  Portrait of Rebecca Tufts Adams and original frame  Grand Army of the Republic Somerville Commander’s chair  Samuel Walter Foss’s chair  Derby Desk Co. style roll top typewriter desk  Chest of drawers from estate of Lucy Stone Edmands ELIGIBILITY Historic Resources: This project would preserve artifacts which were found by the Somerville Historic Preservation Commission to be significant to the history of Somerville. RECOMMENDATION On February 25, 2026, by a vote of 8-0, the Community Preservation Committee recommended to City Council that the Somerville Museum be awarded $100,766 of Community Preservation Act funds from the Historic Preservation reserve to conserve specific artifacts in its collections. FUNDING CONDITIONS The project will follow the General Conditions outlined in a Grant Agreement between the City and the Grantee. Project-specific conditions include the following:  Artifacts that have been preserved using CPA funds may not be sold or disposed of without first obtaining City approval.
