Resolution supporting H.965 and S.2721:
An Act restricting the use of rodenticides in the environment
WHEREAS:
Second-Generation Anticoagulant Rodenticides (SGARs), including
Brodifacoum, Bromadiolone Difenacoum, and Difethialone, are among the
most toxic pesticides in widespread use in Massachusetts, killing by internal
hemorrhaging and bioaccumulating through the food chain; and
WHEREAS:
SGARs are responsible for secondary poisoning of raptors, foxes, fishers,
coyotes, and domestic animals that consume poisoned rodents, with
Massachusetts wildlife studies finding SGAR residue in tested raptors; and
WHEREAS:
Safer alternatives exist, including integrated pest management strategies
and less toxic rodenticides that do not carry the same risk of ecological
harm; and
WHEREAS:
H.965/S.2721 would restrict the sale and use of SGARs in the
Commonwealth, limit their application to licensed professionals in well-
defined circumstances, and promote ecologically sound alternatives; NOW,
THEREFORE, BE IT
RESOLVED:
That the Somerville City Council expresses its support for H.965/S.2721
and urges the Massachusetts General Court to pass this legislation; AND
BE IT FURTHER
RESOLVED:
That a certified copy of this Resolution be transmitted by the City Clerk to
the Joint Committee on Environment, Natural Resources and Agriculture,
the lead sponsors of H.965 and S.2721, and the O[ice of the Governor.
