Past events in other locations have raised over $500,000 for research and potential treatments. There are currently no approved treatments for CMT and patients suffer from increased pain over time and eventually can be unable to walk. The bike ride will have three options for participants - 10 miles (Somerville to Arlington & return), 20 miles (Somerville to Bedford & return), and 40 miles (Somerville to Bedford, Concord, Lincoln, and Belmont). Those who would like to participate but cannot ride a bike will be able to volunteer to help out with registration, set-up, and wayfinding.   Location: We would like to hold a charity bike ride for ~30 people starting on the Somerville Community Path and heading west towards Cambridge and Arlington. We would like to set up 1 or 2 folding tables in the plaza on the Community Path between Elm St and Meacham St in order to process registration and check-in and to provide snacks and coffee for participants. We anticipate setting up around 7:30AM on Sunday, September 24th, starting the ride by 9AM, and breaking down the registration tables before 9;30AM. The participants will return to the Davis Square area upon completion of their ride for a reception at a restaurant. The Cycle 4 CMT event has previously been held in other locations with the largest event in Vermont. This will be the first time holding a Cycle 4 CMT event in the Boston area. CMT affects 1 in 3,300 people worldwide, surely including many Somerville residents. This ride is being organized by three local CMT patients, including one who lives in Somerville and one who works in Somerville.   Financial benefits:  This event will attract about 30 participants to Somerville on Sunday, September 24th. The organizers of the ride will be purchasing coffee and snacks to distribute before the ride begins, from a local shop, and will also be sponsoring a small post-ride celebration at a restaurant in Davis Square. This event coincides with the annual meeting of the CMT Research Foundation in Cambridge, MA on September 22-23 and we hope to be able to attract some of the researchers and advocates who are attending that conference.
