1 Jason Mackey Somerville, MA 02143 July 10, 2023 City of Somerville Human Rights Commission 93 Highland Ave. Somerville, MA 02143 Dear Members of the Human Rights Commission, I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to you today to formally express my enthusiasm and commitment to joining the esteemed Human Rights Commission for the City of Somerville. I am a staunch advocate for human rights, and the Commission's tireless efforts to protect and foster these rights within our community resonate deeply with me. As a gay, Black resident of Somerville, I am acutely aware of the unique challenges marginalized communities face and the pressing need for diverse representation in decision-making bodies. It is my firm belief that all voices should be heard and considered, particularly when addressing issues as fundamental as human rights. In 2022, I took a significant step to foster diversity and representation by running for State Representative. My campaign aimed at not only increasing diversity in government but also advancing policy initiatives that ensure equal rights and opportunities for all, irrespective of their race, religion, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status. Among the issues I am particularly passionate about is housing, which I strongly believe is a fundamental human right. In a progressive city like Somerville, it is imperative that all residents, regardless of their background or economic standing, have access to safe, habitable, and affordable housing. This conviction fuels my eagerness to contribute to the Commission's housing rights initiatives. In addition to my political endeavors, I founded a venture capital firm specifically aimed at investing in diverse founders hailing from underprivileged backgrounds. Through this venture, I have been able to provide resources and opportunities to individuals who may not have otherwise had access to them, further underscoring my commitment to equity and inclusion. I believe that my unique background, experiences, and perspective would offer the Commission a fresh and insightful outlook. I bring with me strong leadership and collaboration skills, honed through my various initiatives, as well as the ability to conduct thorough research, draft detailed reports, and communicate effectively to diverse audiences. It would be an honor to join the Commission's efforts in making Somerville a city that not only respects but champions the rights of all its residents. I am excited about the opportunity to work collaboratively
2 on initiatives that address housing rights and introduce programs that could positively influence our community. I am prepared to offer any additional information you might need, or meet in person to discuss my application further. I sincerely appreciate your consideration and look forward to the possibility of contributing to the Human Rights Commission's vital work. Thank you for your time and consideration. Best Regards, Jason Mackey
