ANNUAL REPORT OF THE BOARD OF HEALTH OF THE CITY OF SOMERVILLE FOR THE YEAR 2022 Message from the Director Karin Carroll, MPH Director of HHS 4 City of Somerville Community and equity defined the work of Health and Human Services in 2022. The mobile farmers market and taxi-to-health programs provided low-income residents more accessible access to local healthy food and medical care. Narcan distribution and training increased community capacity for preventing overdose deaths. Youth services helped support activities for school-age children, which are especially critical for working parents and single-parent households. To support our residents across all ages, HHS supported after-school programs, provided home support to new parents, and provided social services to our senior population. Our nursing team organized numerous vaccine clinics and provided home visits for homebound individuals. Our human services staff supported residents’ mental health and access to resources, and events such as the Moving Wall memorial created space for community-building and collective memory among our veterans. I am particularly proud of our department’s partnership with community organizations. We supported Somerville Homeless Coalition in developing a new engagement center with amenities, including personal storage lockers, a clothing exchange, private counseling offices, and community events facilities. We also visited OnPoint NYC, an experienced operator of two overdose prevention centers. Working with Fenway Health, we developed an in-depth report on conceptual design and location assessment for an overdose prevention center here in Somerville. As we enter 2023, Health and Human Services will continue to provide equitable opportunities for the city of Somerville and lead the way in public health. Mayor Katjana Ballantyne

Office of Food Access Healthy Communities ANNUAL REPORT OF THE BOARD OF HEALTH OF THE CITY OF SOMERVILLE FOR THE YEAR 2022 8 City of Somerville Taxi to Health - April 2022 through March 2023 UNIQUE CLIENTS SERVED RIDES PROVIDED 4,137 AVERAGE COST PER RIDE $22 400+ Initially an emergency measure during the height of the pandemic, the Taxi to Health program has been extended through October 2024. In its first year, this program improved equity and access to care through low-cost taxi rides to grocery stores and medical appointments. "I have no living family and I hate to be a burden on friends. This program helps me get to my doctor’s appointments. I do not know what I do without your help." -Taxi to Health Client

Somerville Prevention partnered with the Somerville Homeless Coalition, COHR, and Fenway Health to host seven Narcan Distribution events. Utilizing the Overdose Data to Action (OD2A) grant, these partnerships led to 60 overdose prevention trainings in 2022.
