COMMUNITY PRESERVATION COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION FOR
City Hall Clock Tower Restoration
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The City of Somerville Capital Projects Division requests funds for repair to the clocktower and roof of
Somerville City Hall. The project will restore damage caused by severe thunderstorms in October, 2023,
and will stabilize the roof envelope to prevent deterioration before implementing the Building Master
Plan which describes substantial restoration of City Hall. The project will comply with the Secretary of
Interior Standards for Historic Preservation and will support proposed improvements for durability and
energy efficiency.
ELIGIBILITY
Historic Resources: This project would preserve and restore a historic building.
RECOMMENDATION
On January 24, 2024 by a vote of 9‐0, the Community Preservation Committee recommended that
$280,010 be appropriated from the Undesignated Fund to the Historic Preservation Reserve.
The Community Preservation Committee further recommended by a vote of 9‐0 that the City of
Somerville be awarded $509,402 of Community Preservation Act funds from the Historic Preservation
Reserve and $140,548 from the Budgeted Reserve to make repairs to the clocktower and roof of City
Hall, as described in their FY24 funding application.

FUNDING CONDITIONS
1. The CPA‐funded portion of the project must be initiated within three years unless extension is
granted by the CPC.
2. CPA funds will be used only for CPA eligible expenses related to the preservation of historic
elements of the City Hall cupola and slate roof with approval of the Historic Preservation
Commission.
3. A permanent sign noting CPA funding will be installed at the completion of the project and a
temporary sign during construction.
4. Unspent funds will be returned to the CPA fund.
