Michael Hendrix Somerville, MA November 8, 2023 Dr. Vanessa Boukili Urban Forestry Division City of Somerville I am a Somerville resident and passionate lover of trees. I’m seeking appointment to Somerville’s Urban Forestry Committee to support the ongoing work of managing, planning, and caring for the city’s trees. As an engaged community member, I’ve previously attended meetings of the Urban Forestry Committee, followed news about tree plantings, and try to stay informed around developments pertaining to the urban forest. In 2023 I participated in the City’s Climate Forward Ambassador program, where I learned about city programs and concepts relating to climate change, environmental justice, and policy. Outreach and community engagement is an area in which I am well-positioned to support UFC. I would love the chance to drive education and other initiatives to inform the community on all the benefits of a strong urban forest. I have regularly volunteered with the Growing Center, attended City Council meetings, and try to stay up to date with work of other local groups, including Green and Open Somerville. As a hobby, I maintain the @CityTreeGuy account (https://www.instagram.com/citytreeguy/), where I photograph, identify, and generally appreciate trees in all their aesthetic, ecological, evolutionary, and historical glory. I’ve personally used the city’s TreeKeeper tree map and have enjoyed getting to know the species in our community. Professionally, I currently focus on greenhouse gas emissions accounting at Optera, as the Learning and Development Manager, where I train on key concepts, protocols, and software usage, and develop training curriculum to communicate processes and best practices.
