CITY OF SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS
Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development
JOSEPH A. CURTATONE, MAYOR
MEMORANDUM
Office of the Executive Director
MEMORANDUM
TO:
Mayor Joseph A. Curtatone
FROM:
George Proakis, Acting Executive Director
DATE:
August 25, 2011
SUBJECT:
EXTENSION OF GRANT #470016 (MASSACHUSETTS DEPARTMENT OF
TRANSPORTATION, FOR THE UNION SQUARE ROADWAY AND
STREETSCAPE IMPROVEMENTS STUDY AND DESIGN)
The Mayor’s Office of Strategic Planning and Community Development (OSPCD) respectfully
recommends that you request the Board of Aldermen to approve a one year extension of grant
#470016 between the City and Massachusetts Department of Transportation in accordance with
s. 2-369 of the Somerville Code. The new expiration date would be August 30, 2012.
The current three-year contract expires on August 30, 2011. The contract extension is needed to
allow the City to work more closely with peer review professionals at the Massachusetts Institute
of Technology as it continues to evaluate roadway alignments in Union Square to finalize a
Locally Preferred Alternative that meets the needs to current and future Somerville residents and
businesses. Additions to the scope of work include expanded services to conduct land, sewer
connection and utility surveying along Webster Street, Prospect Street, Washington Street and
Bow Street. This information will allow the City to take the next steps with planning Union
Square and addressing utility and sewer issues along the south eastern part of the City.
