Ms. Hickey gave a brief overview of the services offered by the Council on Aging and said that the focus for this year is to encourage seniors to be physically active through the use of gentle exercise. The COA also provides caregiver sessions and legal consultation to seniors. Anyone interested in the COA’s activities may obtain information on Facebook or by requesting its newsletter. 192525 - That the Director of Traffic and Parking and the city's Traffic Engineer attend the February 1, 2012 Senior Services Committee meeting at Properzi Manor to discuss traffic and pedestrian safety in Union Square.: There was a discussion about pedestrian safety at Properzi Manor and a request was made by residents for various traffic signage. Mr. Smith stated that a STOP sign could be installed, but not a GO SLOW sign, since the allowable speed on the street is 30 mph, however, Mr. Smith told those present that he would contact the Police Department to request that traffic enforcement take appropriate measures to slow traffic on the street. Alderman White's motion that the Chief of Police implement a directed patrol to enforce stopping at the STOP sign on Prospect Street, was approved. Alderman Connolly's motion that the Director of Traffic and Parking contact the owner of the property housing Citizens Bank, as well as other proprietors on the lot, to discuss how they might prevent the lot from being used as a cut through for drivers attempting to avoid the traffic lights in Union Square, was approved.

Committee Meeting February 1, 2012 Senior Services Committee Page 2 of 2 Printed 2/8/2012 Alderman Connolly’s motion that the Director of Traffic and Parking contact the manager of Citizens Bank to request that one end of the bank’s parking lot be closed to prevent it from being used as a cut through, was approved. Alderman Connolly’s motion that the Director of Traffic and Parking examine the flow of traffic in Union Square and provide recommendations for any possible changes, including the installation of signage to improve safety in the area, was approved. Alderman Connolly’s motion that the Chief of Police take appropriate measures to prevent trucks from idling all night at the Reliable Market in Union Square and to determine whether the truck drivers are complying with all traffic regulations in the area, was approved. Alderman Trane’s motion that the Director of Traffic and Parking determine, and report back to the Committee on Senior Services, whether the city’s Parking Control Officers have the authority to issue tickets to truck operators who keep their vehicles idling, was approved. Alderman White’s motion that the Traffic Commission consider amending the city’s traffic regulations to prohibit bicycle riding in business districts and in the areas of the city’s senior buildings, was approved.
