Roche Ward One Alderman Present Jay Weaver Director of Veterans Services Present • General update of department activity and services Mr. Weaver updated the committee on the activities of the Veterans Services Department and said that record keeping has been a challenge but that task has now been computerized and accounting procedures have been put in place to accurately track benefits. The department has created a Facebook page and a new web site in an effort to inform veterans, especially younger veterans, of the benefits they are entitled to and continues to provide assistance to those veterans seeking employment. Mr. Weaver would also like to work with school children to educate them about veterans and he has enlisted help from the Girls Scouts in an effort to properly dispose of unserviceable American flags. Mr. Weaver is compiling an inventory of dedication in the city and he offered the following suggestions: • elevating the qualification threshold as a means of ensuring the integrity and importance of each dedication, • limiting the number of dedications to one per intersection, • engaging the families of persons recommended for dedications and • redesigning the dedication signage. Alderman Sullivan’s motion that all resolutions requesting dedications be reviewed by the City Clerk so that the Veterans Services Department may perform the appropriate research and compile any military and/or personal data, was approved.
