City Solicitor Present Paulette Renault-Caragianes Director of Health Present Eddie Nuzzo Supt., ISD Present Alderman Heuston was appointed to the committee, for this meeting only, to effectuate a quorum. 193318 - That the Director of SPCD (ISD) inspect 24-26 Morrison Avenue for unhealthy and unsafe conditions and report the findings to this Board’s Committee on Public Health and Safety.: Mr. Nuzzo reported that he visited the property and determined that the boat in the yard is in working order. Mr. Nuzzo doesn't see a problem there, however he will follow-up with Alderman O'Donovan and the City Solicitor's office. RESULT: KEPT IN COMMITTEE 193650 - That the Commissioner of Public Works create curb cuts on the western side of the intersection of Willow Avenue and Beech Street, heading up Willow Avenue, and that the Director of Traffic and Parking evaluate the sight lines on Beech Street, at the crosswalk at Elm Street, and that this matter be referred for a full vetting by the Committee on Public Health and Safety.: The committee is awaiting further information from the Commissioner of Public Works. Committee Meeting October 22, 2012 Public Health and Public Safety Committee Page 2 of 2 Printed 10/24/2012 193652 - That the City Solicitor, Superintendent of Inspectional Services, and Director of Public Health contact communities in the Greater Boston area such as Boston, Lynn, Saugus, Chelsea, Malden and Everett, to investigate any changes they have made to their ordinances or regulations to address rodent problems.: Mr. Nuzzo and Mr. Shapiro informed the members of their findings with respect to the procedures of other communities' efforts to combat rodents. The committee discussed requirements for dumpster cleaning and sizing, having enough inspectors to adequately cover the city, possibly incorporating portion of other communities' ordinances into Somerville's and requirements for contractors to bait sites on state funded projects. Chairman White's motion that the Commissioner of Public Works appear before the Committee on Public Health and Public Safety to speak on baiting requirements for street openings, was approved. RESULT: KEPT IN COMMITTEE 193855 - That the Director of SPCD and the Director of Health inspect properties at the intersection of Webster Avenue, Concord Avenue and Prospect Street, for a severe rodent problem and implement the same response as was used in Ward One.: Mr. Nuzzo reported that he inspected the area and found no evidence of rodent activity, however he does believe that a few houses need to be baited. He will contact those property owners and make them aware of their responsibility to bait their properties and he will secure an order compelling that action, if needed. RESULT: KEPT IN COMMITTEE 193866 - That the Director of SPCD (ISD) appear before the Committee on Public Health and Safety to review trash disposal issues at Clarendon Hill Towers and provide answers to neighbors' concerns.: Alderman Trane stated that the trash chute at the Clarendon Hill Apartments is not in working order and that a dumpster has been placed next to a neighbor's home, thereby creating problems, especially when it is emptied. Mr. Nuzzo had ordered that the dumpster be emptied each day to avoid odors and Alderman Trane requested that it not be emptied on Sundays. The open dumpster is in violation of the city's trash ordinance and Alderman Heuston would like fines issued daily until it is brought into compliance. Mr. Nuzzo will speak to the management of Clarendon Hill Apartments and direct them to relocate the dumpster until the trash chute is repaired and the Solicitor's Office will review the city's ordinances regarding day and times of trash pick-up.
