Update - Somerville Youth Program Coordinator:
Ms. Bacci spoke about the summer jobs program and said that the Youth Center, at 165 Broadway, would
be open on April 7th.
194465 - That the Superintendent of Recreation communicate with the Committee on
Youth Services regarding the scheduling of fields and the reasoning for establishing the
American Youth Football League.:
Mr. Halloran, Mr. Bean and Mr. Boukili spoke on this item. There was a discussion regarding
the $75,000 donation awarded to the city to fund the American Youth Football League (AYFL)
and questions were raised as to whether the funds were actually received yet and if they were
applied to the AYFL, as intended. The Recreation Department will assist the AYFL until it can
stand on its own. Beverly Schwartz, of Pop Warner Football, expressed concerns about
preferential treatment given to the AYFL and noted that Pop Warner has a Patriot League with
no weight limits. Mr. Halloran also reported that Babe Ruth Baseball is back in the city and that
the Youth Softball Program was taken over by the city due to decreased participation.
Alderman McLaughlin’s motion that this item be referred to the Finance Committee with
respect to the use and allocation of donated funds, was approved.
