September 18, 2014 Public Utilities and Public Works Committee Page 1 of 3 Printed 9/22/2014 REPORT OF THE PUBLIC UTILITIES AND PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE Attendee Name Title Status Arrived Robert J. McWatters Chair Present Tony Lafuente Vice Chair Absent William A. White Jr. Alderman At Large Present Also present Bill Zamparelli (NSTAR), Stan Usovicz (Verizon), resident John O'Brien, Stan Koty Mr. O’Brien shared his experience regarding the removal of a double pole on Belmont Place. Mr. Zamparelli explained that his research indicated that only 4 poles included on a recent list were in the DPU’s PLM (Pole Lifecycle Management) system. The missing data was added to the PLM to bring it up to date. Mr. Zamparelli explained that if an item is not in the PLM, then utility companies don’t know about it. The DPU will be implementing a new tracking system in about 2 months that should rectify the inadequacies of the current PLM system. The committee requested that the utility companies develop a system, separate from the DPU’s system, that would be able to provide information regarding when NSTAR’s lines come off a pole, when the next utility company is notified that it’s their turn to move equipment and when that particular move is completed, an so on, until the pole is finally removed. NSTAR and Verizon were asked to obtain an accurate count of double poles in the city. Alderman White asked the utility representatives to convey the message to their superiors that if cooperation is not forthcoming, he will ask that all (except emergency) permits be held up. 196450 - That the Commissioner of Public Works contact the appropriate utility to ascertain why the double pole at 42 Columbus Avenue hasn't been removed during the past 3 years.: RESULT: WORK COMPLETED 196608 - That the Commissioner of Public Works notify the appropriate utility regarding the double pole on Perkins Street.: Verizon and Comcast are still attached.
