Aldermen Lafuente and Niedergang voiced concerns about the slowness in filling positions and suggested that the Personnel Department be more proactive. Chairman Heuston spoke about the need for an engineer with the Beacon Street reconstruction project and stated that the BOA should be made aware of vacancies and interviews for critical positions. The committee requested updates on open positions. Mr. Boukili will provide the committee with the name of the company, and the person acting as the on-call engineer assigned to the City. Members discussed the possibility of increasing salaries for engineering positions. The city made offers to a couple of applicants for the Library Director’s position that were accepted and then declined. Alderman Rossetti asked Mr. Roche to find out if other communities have contracts with their department heads. RESULT: APPROVED 198756: Requesting the appointment of Lieutenant Brian O'Donovan as Fire Captain. The committee inquired about the appointment process and asked why this promotion was submitted just prior to the expiration of the Civil Service list for that period. Additionally, members asked if this is a new position and if there are any budget concerns. Mr. Roche explained that a request came from the Deputy Fire Chief seeking to change the make up of the position. Mr. Roche will keep the BOA updated on the process. RESULT: KEPT IN COMMITTEE
